Reseña del editor In this book ‘English Castles and Their Builders’ illustrated with full colour photographs ground plans and text we attempt to lift from the bowels of dusty vaults the stories the lives of the brilliant medieval castle builders. They were a select band of highly regarded artisans scattered throughout the country. A quotation from 1261 describes the medieval architect thus as “Master Mason with rod and gloves who says to others cut it for me this way and labours not himself yet takes a higher pay”. Many regarded them as idle yet these Ingeniators (Engineers) Master Masons Master Carpenters designers of our medieval castles were accomplished draughtsmen. They were versed in geometry and skilled in most aspects of masonry carpentry lead and glass working capable of executing the design on drawing board or creating a scale model of the intended building.Today we remember architects from more recent centuries and honour Nash Wren and Vanbrugh for their works but who remembers the extraordinary men who were responsible for the mighty military edifices of earlier days - Gandalf Durandus Ailnoth Maurice the Engineer Elias l’Ingeniator Richard of Wolverston John Lewyn Henry Yevele and many others for whom these great ruins which we can still see today stand as silent monuments.
